If you live in Florida, then Sanibel is the best place to start! It is rivaled the best place to beach-collect shells, especially after storms. Maybe since you live on the other side of the state, you can plan an excursion when you have a day or two of free time...
Also, check out the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum while you're there. It's great help for tourists & beginner shell collectors.
