Can anybody please help with identification?
Hello everybody,

I was wondering if anyone could help me to classify these shells:

From Brazil:
<a href="http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981679" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981679">http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981679</a><!-- m --></a>

From Australia or Phillipines, probably. Doesn't appear to be h. rubescens:

Possibly Palidula? From Philippines:

Maybe also Palidula. Locality unknown:

Maybe a pisania, but which one. From Philippines or Australia:
<a href="http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981776" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981776">http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981776</a><!-- m --></a>

Is this Thais Orbita?
<a href="http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981786" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981786">http://www.badongo.com/pic/8981786</a><!-- m --></a>

From Brazil: it is a species of the genus Anadara (family Arcidae). You can check this site, which pictures all brasilian Arcidae: <a href="http://www.conchasbrasil.org.br/english/conchology/especies.asp?idfamily=55" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.conchasbrasil.org.br/english/conchology/especies.asp?idfamily=55">http://www.conchasbrasil.org.br/english ... dfamily=55</a><!-- m --></a> . There you should be able to identify your shell more exactly.

From Portugal: seems to be a Spisula solida.

1.  Looks like Anadara chemnitzi
2.  Looks like Haliotis sieboldii, but that species is usually from Japan
8.  Appears to be Calocochlia roissyana from the Philippines
9.  Can't see much sculpture between the attachments and the tubeworms, but it appears the base is heavily granulated?  If so, that would rule out X. pallidula.  X. konoi would be more likely.
10.  Yes, this looks like X. pallidula
11.  Not sure, but the finely granulated and colored base suggest X. solarioides
12.  Looks like one of the many color forms of Chlamys senatorius
15. Definitely not Thais orbita. It appears to be an immature Cymatium, probably C. parthenopeum  <span class="petit">--Last edited by Paul Monfils on 2010-03-09 04:22:36 --</span>

Can you post a picture of the inside of the portuguese shell? Especially the hinge is important. That should make an identification a lot easier.

Thank you Mikede, Xbonet and Paul for all your help.
Firstly, Mikede: I looked on the Brazilian web site, and came to the same conclusion as Paul: A. chemnitzi. The other is not S. solida, I wish it were (it would make things a lot easier), it has a bit of purple colouring inside, and on the outside, ridges, a bit like V. verrucosa or nux. So, it is not smooth. Thank you again for your help.
Secondly, Xbonet, me había planteado que podrían ser zebrina detrita, pero no estaba segura. La otra concha no parece columbellidae, sino más bien una pisania, aunque no sé cuál.Gracis de nuevo por tu ayuda.
Thirdly, Paul: I can't find another image of H. sieboldii to compare. I said it is probably from Philippines, because the person who sold it to me had purchased it from conchology.inc. It was a wild guess. The shell is about 60-70 mm. long.
I don't believe it is x. konoi, as I have one and there is no visible resemblance, nor does the other seem to be X.solarioides. I agree on c. senatorius. Thank you again for your help.

To me it looks like Mercenaria, we get them here in England but I am not sure about Portugal.

Looks to me like Mercenaria too. In any case a member of the family Veneridae.

Hello Mikede,

I'll do my best: I have taken 2 photos, one of the inside, hopefully you can see the hinge, and another photo of the outside which is probably the best to date. If you need any more photos, please let me know. Thanks for your interest and help!

Looks indeed like Tawera gayi. Only the location data (Portugal) is very strange for that species...
