2 unknown Oliva shells
Hello,

I've got 2 Oliva shells I can't identify. Maybe somebody has an idea what it could be? I don't know the locality for both of the shells. The smaller shell is about 3cm long.

Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike, the left shell is Oliva polpasta f. davisae Durham 1950. from the Gulf of California. The right shell is giving me a problem ( and I specialise in oliva!) The nearest I can get is Oliva pacifica Marrat 1870 from the W. coast of the Malayan peninsula. The colours are not quite right but it has the sharp-edged spire. Perhaps you could post a better picture of this shell on its own, that may help.
Cheers,
Dave

Thank you very much Dave!

I took some more shots of the right Oliva, I hope these are helpful to you.

Greets,
Mike

Still not sure, I have not seen anything exactly like it. Could be a form of O.ponderosa Duclos. 1840 from the Indian ocean, it could even be a wierd O. amethystina. Sorry mate, beats me. I would have to handle it and compare various characteristics to get a positive identification, some Olive shells are notoriously difficult to sort out.
