Book to ID shells
I inherited a large collect of rare shells from the 1950's.
Is there a book that would be easiest to use in IDing
them.

This is a good book with excellent plates but does not give the distribution of any of the species illustrated, only where the figured specimen is from. This is the only downside but a pretty big one. If you have a shell that comes close to matching a picture but comes from a different area it makes identification tricky. I can't understand why he did not at least give the region i.e. Indo-Pacific etc.
If you can find a second hand copy, as it is out of print, Dance and Abbot's 'Compendium of Seashells' is one of the best, or failing that Eddie Hardy's website 'gastropods.com' is a very good identification tool.

Just out of curiosity, if you have not identified them how do you know they are rare?

You may trade (exchange) some of your shells with my book: Encyclopedia of Marine Gastropod. Email me if you interested.
