Sea Shells At the Local Auction What Do I Have
Okay, I never do auctions, but I peddled past one today and there were shells, and rocks and minerals. I won all three lots. I had to pay $27 for the shells, but these were unusual at least to me.
Anything stand out in this lot? Multiple pics linked below. If I need to post more detailed pics of any of the shells let me know. ( I have a feeling I will) And I will most likely tomorrow in brighter natural light. Thanks for your help folks. Seems like I am the only dummy in this forum. I did not want to clutter the forum with multiple posts. https://postimg.cc/image/p32tek7o7/ https://postimg.cc/image/npb6ivqav/ https://postimg.cc/image/ma9lu7exz/ https://postimg.cc/image/e4rjw30zr/ |

RE: Sea Shells At the Local Auction What Do I Have
Hi Shellsurfer,
if you show many specimens in one picture, it´s always extremely helpfull if they are numbered. This might be a first guess (Paul Monfils will know better): https://postimg.cc/image/p32tek7o7/ upper row: 1. Charonia tritonis (juvenile), 2. Cypraeidae. middle row: 3. Leporicypraea mappa, 4. Turbo petholatus? 5. Melongena corona? lower row: 6. Mitra mitra, 7. Olividae. https://postimg.cc/image/npb6ivqav/ upper row: 1. Conus litteratus, 2. Oxymeris maculata, 3. Tanea lineata, 4. three specimens of Cypraeidae; too much abraded for determination (at least for me) middle row: 5. Arestoides argus, 6. Cypraeidae, 7. Clanculus puniceus? 8. Cassidae?? lower row: 9. / 10. Fasciolaria spec. 11. Pusula radians? 12. Monetaria caputserpentis? 13. Amphidromus spec. (terrestrial), Camaenidae 14. Haustellum haustellum. https://postimg.cc/image/ma9lu7exz/ in front of (left of) the fish: Lyncina carneola. Kind regards: wolf |

Apparently they are not as unusual as I thought. Learned a lot about grades, and color clarity. There were Sea Fans, some softball sized corals, sand dollars, and starfish. |

RE: Sea Shells At the Local Auction What Do I Have
Hello ShellSurfer,
Well, looks like wolf got here first, but since I made up a list I might as well post it. It will be the same as wolf's list in most cases, maybe a few different. Also, he used some of the more specific genera, like those in the family Cypraeidae, while I just used the broader genera like Cypraea. Having both may help you find more information. As he said, it is rather difficult to attach a name to each image because the images are rather spread around. So I haven't attempted to do that. If you look up a name, from his list or mine, you will find pictures which will allow you to identify the shell that gets that name. So here's my list: Charonia tritonis (juvenile) Cypraea mauritiana Conus litteratus Terebra maculata Casmaria erinaceus Natica lineata Cypraea caputserpentis (3 specimens, very worn) Cypraea caputserpentis (1 specimen, slightly smaller, good condition) Cypraea mappa Turbo petholatus - or - Turbo reevei (both are quite variable, especially T. reevei) Melongena corona Cypraea argus Cypraea scurra Clanculus puniceus Jenneria pustulata Cypraea carneola Fasciolaria tulipa (juvenile) Murex (Haustellum) haustellum Olivancillaria gibbosa Mitra mitra Amphidromus chloris (yellow land snail) cowfish (there are many species and this isn't my area) |

RE: Sea Shells At the Local Auction What Do I Have
I really like the Cypraea mauritiana. Neat shell.
I will post some better pics Monday. I will sell, or trade the balance besides the Cypraea mauritiana. I also like the Cypraea mapa. |
