Charonia variegata (or Charonia tritonis variegata) live in Carribe and in eastern Mediterranean. I thought you are from Carribe!!
However warning, in Mediterranean it is protected. Mauro |

Caronia tritonis variegata is protected by international Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern, 19.IX.1979).
You can find it at: http://conventions.coe.int/Treaty/EN/Tr ... ml/104.htm The protectet mollusca are very few: Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791 Gibbula nivosa A.Adams, 1851 Dendropoma petraeum (Monterosato,1884) Erosaria spurca (Linnaeus, 1758) Luria lurida (Linnaeus, 1758) Schilderia achatidea (Gray in G.B. Sowerby II, 1837) Zonaria pyrum (Gmelin, 1791) Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758) Ranella olearia (Linnaeus, 1758) Charonia lampas (Linnaeus, 1758) Charonia tritonis variegata (Lamarck, 1816) Mitra zonata Marryat, 1818 Helix pomatia Linnaeus, 1758 Microcondylaea compressa Menke, 1828 Unio elongatus C.Pfeiffer, 1825 Pholas dactylus Linnaeus, 1758 In Italy sometime pecuniary penalties are inflict for collection of these species, I dont know if there is control in Greece. Nevertheless many of these species are common. Â --Last edited by mauro on 2008-11-30 21:19:06 -- |

lot of useful information!! thanks !!
i think here it works different..you are not allowed to take almost any shell that is alive...if they find you there is a fine..but i thin they are more interested for penalties about fish. and its very common here to pick up Patella ferruginea..and they are plenty of them!! on the other hand the last few years you are not allowd to collect erchins...not even one...restaurants used to pick and serve them...and almost vanished them. |
