3 shells I need identified
Hello,
Your first shell is Strombus costatus, the so-called "milk conch". <a href="http://www.jaxshells.org/costv.htm" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.jaxshells.org/costv.htm">http://www.jaxshells.org/costv.htm</a><!-- m --></a> <a href="http://www.schnr-specimen-shells.com/31913.JPG" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.schnr-specimen-shells.com/31913.JPG">http://www.schnr-specimen-shells.com/31913.JPG</a><!-- m --></a> <a href="http://www.ryukogei.com/dscn%201652-1.jpg" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ryukogei.com/dscn%201652-1.jpg">http://www.ryukogei.com/dscn%201652-1.jpg</a><!-- m --></a> The bivalve appears to be Laevicardium laevigatum, the "common egg cockle". <a href="http://dream-shells.nuxit.net/car0011a.html" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://dream-shells.nuxit.net/car0011a.html">http://dream-shells.nuxit.net/car0011a.html</a><!-- m --></a> <a href="http://bigai.world.coocan.jp/pic_book/data19/r001819.html" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://bigai.world.coocan.jp/pic_book/data19/r001819.html">http://bigai.world.coocan.jp/pic_book/d ... 01819.html</a><!-- m --></a> The third shell appears to be a Cerithium, but I can't see enough detail to be certain of the species. Cerithium eburneum, the "ivory cerith", would be my best guess, though it doesn't look quite right to me. How large is the shell? Â Cerithium eburneum usually doesn't excede 30 mm in length. If this is a bigger shell, I'd be interested in knowing - and possibly in a better picture? <a href="http://www.jaxshells.org/ceburnea.htm" target="_blank"><!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.jaxshells.org/ceburnea.htm">http://www.jaxshells.org/ceburnea.htm</a><!-- m --></a> Â <span class="petit">--Last edited by Paul Monfils on 2007-06-25 06:29:24 --</span> |
