CYPRAEA AURANTIUM
This it is for sure one of the most appealing shells. A full history one and once a meaning of status.
The first specimen known was carried out by James Cook and brought to Europe. In 1781, was described by Martyn as Cypraea aurora. Since it was not recognized as a valid name , appeared the "aurantium". At that time, on the polinesian isl. only the tribal chief was allowed to pocess it. Meant status, power and associated with magical rituals. This it is one of those species that have massively traded. I have seen them with all sizes; shapes ; forms and imature ones. This last chapter it is the one that concerns me. More and more imature shells are coming up to the market. I have never seen so many specimens being offered. |
