i think here it works different..you are not allowed to take almost any shell that is alive...if they find you there is a fine..but i thin they are more interested for penalties about fish.

and its very common here to pick up Patella ferruginea..and they are plenty of them!!

on the other hand the last few years you are not allowd to collect erchins...not even one...restaurants used to pick and serve them...and almost vanished them.
