Shell Identification
Hello,

I am new to the forum, and am very happy that I found you! I have been cataloguing my shell collection, and have not been able to identify some of my collection. Can you please help me to identify these four shells? I have provided a photo of both sides of each.

Thank you.

If the link was to your own album and you would like to link your album from a personal web site or create a custom email message, please follow these instructions:

After you receive the share email, copy the URL, or web address, included at the bottom of the email.
This web address can be sent to friends or family with a custom email message, or you can use it to add to your personal web site.

I'm so sorry, Paul!

Here's a link that I hope you will be able to open:

If you continue to have a problem opening it, I will upload my
photos to a different website.

Thank you.

Shell Identification
Hi again!

#1A,B is an immature Queen Conch or Pink Conch, Strombus gigas. The lip has been trimmed and the apex cut off, probably to make a "shell horn". If you know how to blow a trumpet or bugle, you can get a pretty impressive sound out of a shell like this.

#2A,B is the Florida Crown Conch (not closely related to the true conchs, in spite of the name), Melongena corona.

#3A,B is the Caribbean Crown Conch, Melongena melongena, from the mid to southern Caribbean.

#4A,B is either the Florida Fighting Conch (Strombus alatus) or the Caribbean Fighting Conch (Strombus pugilis). The shell is too beachworn to be sure. The shape suggests S. alatus but the orange color suggests S. pugilis.

Cheers! --Last edited by Paul Monfils on 2009-05-17 05:23:41 --
