How to make shells soft?
Is there any treatment/chemicals I could use to soften shell pieces (thickness of the shell is around 0.5 mm)without losing its iridiscence and colors?
Any recommendation is greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Regards Paloma |

Not much chance of doing that I'm afraid. Â You can soften bones by removing the calcium salts with acid or other chemicals, so that the flexible matrix is left. Â But in shells the calcium salts are pretty much the whole deal. Â There may be traces of proteinaceous material in among the calcium crystals, but 99% of the shell is made of calcium carbonate and sometimes lesser amounts of calcium phosphate. Â So basically if you remove the calcium salts, the shell is GONE - dissolved! Â Why did you want to soften them? Â So you can drill them? Â There are ways to do that.
