shell ID
There are a number of shells here that I can't positively ID to species because the shell is rather beachworn and/or the picture is too small, but I can ID some of them and will suggest possible ID for the others where possible ...
Top row, L to R: 1. Probably Patella sp., may be Patella granularis 2. Siphonaria sp., may be Siphonaria deflexa 3. Cellana sp., species uncertain 4. Astraea sp., may be Astraea americana 5. Astraea sp., species uncertain 6. Casmaria erinacea 7. Oliva vidua albofasciata Middle row, L to R: 1. Conus sp., pretty worn but probably Conus magus 2. Conus sp., may be Conus elegans 3. Vexillum sp., species uncertain but similar to Vexillum taeniatum and Vexillum coccineum 4,5. Lophiotoma acuta 6. Vexillum sp., may be Vexillum acuminatum 7. Nassarius dorsatus 8. Babylonia spirata Bottom row, L to R: 1. Polinices (Mammilla) fibrosa 2,4,6. Natica sp., probably Natica filosa 3. Natica sp., possible ID Natica arachnoidea? 5,7. Natica onca 8. Thais (Mancinella) mancinella 9. Cantharus sp., probably Cantharus fumosus |

Dear Paul,
Thank for your help. Unfortunately many of my shells are worn indeed. (I bought them in florist’ and hobbyshop. In Hungary isn’t too easy to get seasells, but I love them. I’m trying identify what I buy but it’s difficult to me. I’m usually use the www.gastropods.com to identification. If I knew the family I would find the species easier.) If it’s not problem I would like to post other shells to ID. Regards, Mark |
