Need ID for some shells from Malaysia
Hello,
I'm having trouble identifying the exact species of some shells I found on the beaches of Malaysia. On these pictures are some of them (one picture is front view and the other one back view of the same shells). For the scale: the Trochus in the top left corner is about 4cm across. I'd be very glad for every help! <img src="images/smiley/smile.gif" alt="" border="0" /> Mike  <a href="http://img234.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img19381hz9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/461/img19381hz9.th.jpg" alt="http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/461/img19381hz9.th.jpg" style="border:0" /></a> <a href="http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img19371qa4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2175/img19371qa4.th.jpg" alt="http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2175/img19371qa4.th.jpg" style="border:0" /></a>  <span class="petit">--Last edited by mikede on 2008-05-16 08:11:13 --</span> |

Need ID for some shells from Malaysia
Hi Mike, this is as much as I can identify.
Top row #1. Trochus sp. ? maculatus Linne. 1758     #2. Thais blandfordi (Melvill 1893)     #3. Cerithium columna Sowerby 1834 Middle row. #1.Thais sacellum (Born 1778)       #2. Morula granulata (Duclos 1832)       #3. ? juvenile Cronia margariticola (Broderip 1833)       #4. Cymatium (Monoplex) aquatile (Reeve 1844) Bottom row. #1. Pythia sp. (a pulmonate)       #2. unknown       #3. ? Coralliophilidae       #4 juvenila Conus glans Hwass 1792 Sorry I can't do any beter but some specimens are worn and others look to be juveniles. A better, brighter shot of the Trochus  would be helpful. Dave   |

Thanks Dave and Rafael!
I took three better shots of the Trochus <a href="http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1940oo2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/3236/img1940oo2.th.jpg" alt="http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/3236/img1940oo2.th.jpg" style="border:0" /></a> <a href="http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1941pa7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/906/img1941pa7.th.jpg" alt="http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/906/img1941pa7.th.jpg" style="border:0" /></a> <a href="http://img215.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1942qe8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4360/img1942qe8.th.jpg" alt="http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4360/img1942qe8.th.jpg" style="border:0" /></a> For the Coralliophilidae in the bottom row the best I can get is Quoyula madreporarum (Sowerby, 1820). Can someone confirm that? Mike  <span class="petit">--Last edited by mikede on 2008-05-17 15:10:38 --</span> |

Hi Mike, yes it looks like T. maculatus. I think you could be right with the Quoyula, I thought it may be but it is very worn and lacking the pinkish colour on the parietal area.

Hi Mike!
On the bottom row: Maybe it's #2: Eucithara reticulata Reeve, 1846(non Risso, 1826) Â just my guess.. Raffy |
