Help me identify these bivalves, etc. please guys
Hi everyone. I need help identifying these shells that have been in my cabinet for a decade now. I know cowries, cones and others but not bivalves and some gastropods.

Could you also tell me the world record for a Phalium glaucum?

And last favor, could you also tell me the market price for each of them? I don't want to be givin away expensive shells. I also believe there is a ban against collecting certain species of bivalves but I'm not a poacher. I had these long long time ago.

Just follow the links and the descrïption for each is the size.
Thanks guys.

Help me identify these bivalves, etc. please guys
clam 1 - Hippopus hippopus

clam 2 - Tridacna sp., probably Tridacna maxima but can't be certain from this angle of view

clam 3 - Tridacna squamosa

clam 4 - Tridacna crocea

clam 5 - Limidae, not the best angle of view for an ID but I believe it is Ctenoides ales

clam 6 - Pinctada sp., probably Pinctada margaritifera

clam 7 - Hyotissa hyotis

clam 8 - Acesta rathbuni

clam 9 - Codakia tigerina

clam 10 - Trachycardium sp., probably Trachycardium enode

clam 12 - Tridacna sp., possibly a small Tridacna gigas, but again this is not an ideal view for ID

Pecten 1,2,3 - Probably all color forms of Chlamys senatorius

tun - Tonna galea

miter 1 - Mitra mitra

miter 2 - Mitra eremitarum

melo 1 - Melo broderippii

melo 2 - Melo broderippii - the young ones often have these strong markings, the big ones don't

murex small - looks like Chicomurex venustulus

fulgoraria - Fulgoraria hamillei (Did you list the size correctly for this? 214 mm would be possible world record size.)

cockle - Corculum cardissa

small shell - Nerita exuvia

big murex - Chicoreus ramosus

big shell 1 and 2 - Pleuroploca trapezium

pearlized - the sculpture suggests Astraea caelata

bolma - I think it may be a Bolma girgyllus with most of the spines broken off?? --Last edited by Paul Monfils on 2008-07-16 01:14:58 --

Hi Paul! The world is so fortunate to have someone like you. Thank you so much for your help. And your reply was so fast even.

Yes Paul, the fulgoraria is 214mm. My calipers is only upto 160mm. I measured it again 213mm-214mm. I have two of those, the other one is 200mm. They look similar but the other one is lighter and the pattern is not so vivid.
fulgoraria 2

Here some more angles of clam 2

Thank you so much Paul.

btw Paul, how does fulgoraria hamillei differ from a fulgoraria ericarum? I saw a specimen that looks like the one I have and it is labeled fulgoraria ericarum. Thank you again.

Yes, your shell actually is "ericarum". I forgot about that one because I use Poppe & Goto's volute book, and ericarum isn't in it since it was described in 1998 and the book was published in 1992. The only difference I can see between ericarum and hamillei is the color pattern, which is not a valid basis for naming a species, so I wonder if ericarum should be considered a form of hamillei. There may be other differences though. I will have to try to find a detailed descrïption of ericarum. In any case, your shell is that form/species.

Clam 2 is definitely Tridacna maxima.

btw Paul, I found another ericarum on George Sangiouloglou's website and it says Ex. World Record size. It is 208mm and being sold for $800. (I had no idea it is worth that much.hahaha) I was trying to email him about my specimen but can't get it through. Just wanted to tell him about my 214mm specimen. I almost gave it to a friend for $15. If my ericarum is the world record size, i don't what do with it. It will stay in my cabinet for awhile longer probably.

Oh perhaps "Ex. World Record" size meant it was once the world record size. I just wonder what the current record size is. My specimen is then "worthless"

Would you also know the world record size for Ancistrolepis vietnamensis? I've seen alot on the internet and nothing came close to my 118mm specimen. I just labeled it Giant and kept it in my cabinet. The closest I've seen so far is a 109mm. I ask a lot of questions, huh. Wink
