Would like ID please - shell is 76 years old
I know nothing about this shell except that I was a little girl and I remember my father found this on the beach in Miami Beach. It took him and a friends hours to extract the snail.
Would love to know something about it and a possible value. It is not 100% perfect as I note there are some rough edges. Thanks so much! |

RE: Would like ID please - shell is 76 years old
This is the King Helmet Shell, scientific name Cassis tuberosa. Florida is the usual northern limit of its geographic range, though it occasionally is found as far north as the Carolinas. It is primarily a Caribbean species, ranging all the way south to Brazil. It is also found on the other side of the Atlantic, in the Cape Verde islands. It reaches about 10 inches in length, occasionally larger. It feeds on sea urchins and sand dollars.
