Chama sp ? - bullas1 - 12-16-2009

I just received a Chama that was collected at East Panama and I'm not sure of the ID. Data said Chama congregata but it doesn't look like the ones I've collected on the east coast of Florida.I'm not able to set a link to a picture but if anyone will email me at amphidromus1@cfl.rr.com I will send a picture of the shell.
Thanks for any help and Happy Holidays

This doesn't look like Chama congregata. The color and sculpture are wrong, and although I don't know the size of this specimen, I'm betting it is well over an inch. C. congregata seldom reaches an inch in length. I believe this is Chama macerophylla.

Paul,

I'd have to disagree. C. congregata does come in yellow with purples. The spines do not appear to have the radial grooves characteristic of C. macerophylla. However, since this shell is about 1.5 inches in height, you do have a point about size. I have collected C. congregata at sizes slightly over an inch, but have not seen one at 1.5 inches.
