Mediterranean Limpet searching for her specie. - hector - 11-03-2009

Hey everybody happy to meet you in this foroum. My name is Hector Giourgis and I am ichthyologist and scuba instructor from Greece and I am very interest in species identification. I have made a blog-site for the animals of Mediterranean sea (www.medi-sea.blogspot.com).

At my first post I am looking if anyone can help me with this small limpet. I find it at the Aegean sea (eastern Mediterranean sea) at the depth of 13m and it is not bigger than 2mm.

thank you

2 mm ?? Wow! What are you using for a camera? In the Mediterranean there are a few species of very tiny limpets of the genus Propilidium, in the family Lepetidae. And, also a few species of Cocculina, in the family Cocculinidae. It could be one of these. But I think it is going to be difficult to ID with any degree of certainty. Your shell could also be a small juvenile of a larger species. There are several limpet species in your area, including Cellana radiata, Patella caerulea, Patella rustica, and perhaps Patella ferruginea and Patella ulyssiponensis. Your shell could be a juvenile of any of them.
