Tropical Veneridae - conchylinet - 07-26-2009

Hi,
I am not sure of the id of the specie below (33 mm from Mauritius).
The closest I got is Lioconcha ornata, but the pattern of this one doesn't look like any other.

Thanks

Hi Pierre!

Lioconcha species are often diffucult to identify (at least for me...). If you are willing the spend some time on this, you can download the "A review of the Indo-Pacific Lioconcha" paper from http://www.publish.csiro.au/paper/MR02006

The paper is available freely. Just click on the PDF link at the right side of the page. There you will find identification keys for all Lioconcha species and a lot of pictures.

Mike, that is a very good paper. I wish I had that when I was identifying bivalves for a local museum!
