Common shell id's - nick - 03-18-2009

Hi all.

I would be very greatful if someone could identify these shells for me, i believe the first 3 to be correct but am unsure on the others.

As you can tell i don't know much about shells, my daughter collects them and i said i'd find out what they were.

They were all collected in the SW of the UK.

Top Row:
1 - Cockle (Cardium species)
2 - Blue Mussel or Edible Mussel (Mytilus edulis)
3 - Common European Limpet (Patella vulgata)
4 - Not certain at this angle. Could be an Ocenebra or a Buccinum whelk. If you can provide a straight-on view of the underside I should be able to ID it.

Bottom Row:
1, 2 - Common Atlantic Periwinkle (Littorina littorea)
3 - Turret Shell (Turritella species)
4, 5 - Reticulated Nassa (Nassarius reticulatus)
6 - Top Shell (Gibbula species)
7 - Obtuse Periwinkle or Yellow Periwinkle (Littorina obtusata)

For the ones where I wrote "species", I'll confirm the exact species when I get home tonight and have access to my books (I'm on a coffee break at work right now). --Last edited by Paul Monfils on 2009-03-19 03:46:27 --

Top first is Acanthocardia tuberculata.
Top fourth is Buccinum undatum (damaged).
Bottom fifth is probably Gibbula umbilicalis (aperture view would be helpful).

Can you confirm Paul? --Last edited by conchylinet on 2009-03-18 17:36:55 --

Those ID's look good to me, so Nick, common names would be ...

Top #1 - Tuberculate Cockle
Top #4 - Common Northern Whelk
Bottom #3 - Common European Turret (Turritella communis)
Bottom #6 - Umbilicate Top Shell or Umbilicate Gibbula

I think that covers them all. If you would like a few pretty shells for your daughter, email me - PaulCyp@cox.net - and I'll send her/you a box with some nice things.

Nick, if you are in the London area there is a shell convention on the 2nd of May with lots of cheap and pretty shells for sale. See the ad in the 'Shell Shows' section.
