Conus litteratus? - wolfi - 02-26-2012

Hi,

I don't know anything about Conidae, so I need some help in determining the following specimen. Might be Conus litteratus L., 1758. Could that be right? The origin is unknown.

Conus cf. litteratus? Height: 82 mm.

ID seems to be correct. It would be easier to identify the cone when you show the dorsum. The underside of the aperture in litteratus and leopardus is different and better to judge from the dorsal side.

Hi Paul,
thanks for your answer. Sorry for showing the wrong view. I've made some more pictures which might help. I hope so, at least.

Although the pattern fits for Conus leopardus the aperture end shows that we deal indead with Conus litteratus. Has this specimen a filed lip?

"filed lip"? Yes, unfortunately. It's a shame.......  >Sad.
