turbinidae or trochidae ? - diocrisseashells1000 - 10-31-2011

Hello There,
I am confused if this is in Turbinidae (Tegula) family Or in Trochidae family. I cant find it in any sites that i've been search, the nearest figure i can give is clanculus scotti but the problem is the size (8.5-14mm.). Can anybody try to id it ? Found in the Philippine and the exact size is 18mm.

Here is the link :

I would say Trochidae, Clanculus sp.

Thank Sir Dave for your great help. Trochidae (Clanculus sp.) it will be.

I believe this is Monilea callifera (Trochidae)

Maybe you are right Paul, but I must admit I have never seen one as dark as this before. I have a few and they are all much lighter in colour. We need a dedicated Trochidae specialist ti identify it for us.

Hi Dave,

Yes, my specimens are likewise much lighter in color than this one.  But I checked Poppe's site, and there are some there that I thought were comparable to this one.

Hello Sir Paul & Sir Dave,
I look on Poppe's site and there found 14 photos of Monilea callifera, it is somehow partly the same into the one that ive post except mine is more darker and dont have just dashes of dark blotch, I also look on to the origin on where it is found (Visayan sea: Panay, Antique). Mine was found in Batangas (Luzon) which is far enough in Panay. And this might be the possibility on why they have a variation on the colour pattern.
With this I consider both of your identification correct. And i thank both of you for your great effort, determination and help.

Happy shelling,
Diocris.
