help identifying this shell - akhinch - 10-13-2011 This is a shell found on the beach in Connecticut by my son and MIL. I know very little about shells and thought it might be some kind of Nerite but can't find anything like it in any of the common shell guides. It's 1.5 inches in length. Any help is appreciated!! Re: help identifying this shell - dave r - 10-14-2011 Any chance of a photo? Re: help identifying this shell - akhinch - 10-14-2011 "dave r"' Wrote:Any chance of a photo?Sorry!! I had uploaded one but I didn't realize it needed to be a link only. Here it is again: http://www.badongo.com/pic/13855900 Re: help identifying this shell - dave r - 10-14-2011 What you have here is a 'chain' of 4 Slipper Limpets (Crepidula fornicata-lovely name!) They live like this one on top of another, the smaller ones on top are males and the larger ones on the bottom are females. Sometimes there will be a chain of a dozen or more. Dave Re: help identifying this shell - akhinch - 10-14-2011 thanks so much! i had thought they might be 'fornicating'...since it looked like they were stacked but they wouldn't separate. what an ironic name!! |
