Unknown half pecten valve - Emma - 09-26-2011

Hello everybody,

I need some help identifying this half pecten shell which has been in my possession for the last 28 years (I bought it on my first school trip to the seaside when I was just 4!). It's a lovely orange colour, but I've no idea where it is from. It's about 50 mm.

Best wishes,

Emma.

My best guess would be Argopecten circularis from West Central America.  Right size, shape and rib count.  These brightly colored ones are pretty common in that species, though not the "usual" coloration.  And they are sold in bulk for craftwork, so are likely to turn up in shops just about anywhere.
