Identification - Abdul Azeez Abdul Hakeem - 06-28-2014

Dear Members,

I would appreciate if you could identify the shell in the attached photo.

Thanks

Well, it is an immature cowrie shell, family Cypraeidae, but identifying immature cowrie species can be tricky because they look so different from the adult form of the same species.  That having been said, based on size, color, markings and general shape, I believe this is an immature Arabian cowrie, Cypraea (Mauritia) arabica.  Here is what the adult shell looks like: http://www.seashellhub.com/Cypraeidae/Cypraeaarabica.JPG
