Full Version: Pearl still in shell **Need Help**

I have this pearl still in the shell and I believe that my dad got it from Iraq and brought it back. He worked the oil rigs over there in the 70's. Can anyone help me figure out?  What kind it is would love to know all i can due to it was given by my dad ............I have tried some looking on net but can't find right info

Hi there. When a pearl is attached to the shell like yours it is known as a 'Blister Pearl'. Sadly there is no way you can detach it without destroying it so enjoy it as it is with the memories.
True pearls grow inside the soft parts of the actual pearl oyster and are easily removed.

The shell itself is the "Winged Pearl Oyster", scientific name Pteria penguin.  You may be able to find some more information by searching that name.
