Hey fellow shell collectors!

Does anyone recognize this murex.  It was taken off of Charleston, SC and is ~15mm.  It reminds me of a Pterynotus or Pteropurpura bequaerti.  Cool stuff and this guy is in fairly good condition.

It could be bequaerti but to me it looks more like Pterynotus phaneus (Dall 1889), both are very rare so an excellent find either way.

thanks alot... I compared it to P. phaneus online and it appears similar.  Just how rare are these?  This one has no operculum but appears to have no major defects or chips.  This is uncleaned so some bleach solution could get it nice and white.  <span class="petit">--Last edited by Chromodoris on 2008-03-30 03:06:02 --</span>

As rare as rocking horse droppings! If you go to Eddy Hardy's website and find the Murex pages you will see a picture of my P.phaneus.
