I have 3 shells I am going to sell on ebay. Can you identify them for me? Thanks.http://www.badongo.com/pic/859277
Hello Kent,
I think I can help you: The big one is Cypraecassis rufa, The round one is Tonna variegata, and the Coneshell is, in my opinion, Conus bandanus. Jan
Thanks, Jan. Are there common names? I thought the cone might be a Nobility cone. Thanks again, Kent
Hi Kent,

Cypraecassis rufa is variously known as Bullmouth helmet Shell, Cameo Helmet or Red Helmet, pretty much in that order of frequency. Tonna species are known as Tun Shells, so Tonna variegata would be the Variegated Tun Shell. Conus bandanus doesn't really have a common name. Its name refers to the fact that its pattern is arranged in distinct bands. In such cases, the species name is usually used as the common name. Conus species are known as Cone shells, so this species would just be referred to as the Bandanus Cone Shell, or simply Bandanus Cone. The Nobility Cone does have somewhat similar markings, but it's a smaller species, the color is different, and there are a number of other minor differences in shell shape and structure. --Last edited by Paul Monfils on 2007-07-25 05:51:08 --
