I collected these olive shells in 1979, from dredged material during the construction of a port at Jazan, Saudi Arabia, which is at the Southern part of the Red Sea.
Several of them appear to be of the same species but I am having trouble identifying
most of them.
Please can you help?
All of the Oliva shells (#1-26, and 29) are the same species, Oliva bulbosa, which is the only Oliva species found in the Red Sea. The others (27, 28 and 30-35) are also members of the Olive Shell family, but in the genus Ancilla. There are at least 2 species, probably 3, can't be certain without closer examination. Likely species - Ancilla cinnamonea, Ancilla ventricosa, Ancilla djboutina.
Thank you very much for your reply.
